Short answer: On 24 October 2026, BuiltList, Sri Lanka's startup and product directory, launched BuiltList Ideas. It is a free library of startup ideas for Sri Lanka. Each idea is stamped Build it, Needs a twist or Skip, backed by local evidence you can open, and linked to the Sri Lankan founders already building something close. A new idea is published every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 9:00 am Sri Lanka time.
What we shipped
BuiltList started as a place to find what Sri Lankans are building. Ideas adds the other half: what Sri Lankans need built.
The launch has three parts:
- Idea pages, each a sourced write-up of one local problem.
- Remix, where you paste your own idea and get a verdict.
- "I'm building this", a button that lets founders put their product next to an idea.
Ideas live at builtlist.space/ideas. They are free to build, and nobody owns them.
What's on every idea page
Every idea page follows the same structure, so you can compare ideas quickly.
- The stamp. Build it means the pain is real and someone can charge for a fix here. Needs a twist means the problem is real, but the obvious product will struggle in Sri Lanka without a change. Skip means the evidence says it is not worth building now, and the note says why.
- The pillars. Local pain, Can it charge here and Export angle, each rated and each linked to a source you can open.
- Build effort and how people could pay. A rough build estimate (for example "WhatsApp bot, a weekend") and whether LankaQR, Koko, PayHere or cash on delivery fit. Both are clearly marked "Estimate · not verified".
- Why. The reasons behind the stamp, in plain points.
- The Sri Lankan twist. How to change the obvious product so it works here, such as building on WhatsApp or adding Sinhala and Tamil.
- Up against. Apps and companies already in the space.
- Closest on BuiltList. Approved BuiltList listings that are building something nearby, with a line on why each one matches.
That last section is the link between the two halves of BuiltList. An idea page sends readers straight to real Sri Lankan products and their founders.
Remix: stamp your own idea
Every idea page, and the main Ideas page, has a Remix box. You paste an idea, or your own take on an existing one, and get back:
- a stamp: Build it, Needs a twist or Skip,
- a Sri Lankan twist, and
- the BuiltList founders already building nearby.
Remixes show under "How visitors remixed this idea" on each idea page. A good visitor remix can become a published idea, after the same editor check as every other idea.
Try it on the Ideas page.
"I'm building this": claim an idea
If you are already working on something close to an idea, press I'm building this on the idea page. It takes you to the BuiltList submit form with the idea attached.
Listing is free. Every submission gets a hand review, usually within about 24 hours. Once your product is approved, it can show under "Who's already building" on every idea it matches. That puts your product in front of founders and users who are reading about the exact problem you solve.
How ideas are chosen
BuiltList starts from problems Sri Lankans raise in public: on Reddit, in Facebook groups, on X and in the news. An editor checks every source before an idea is published. Any number without a source is removed.
Ideas are grouped into 12 sectors: Everyday Colombo, Bills & utilities, Transport, Food & groceries, Money & payments, Health, Schools & learning, Jobs & side income, Tourism, Farming, Diaspora and Small shops.
The first five ideas
These five ideas were live on 24 October 2026:
- RideCharge Checker: check and dispute ride-hailing and delivery charges that change after booking or are taken twice. Stamped Build it.
- SLT Bill Dispute Checker: an independent way to check how SLT counts home data across Anytime and Night packages. Stamped Needs a twist.
- PowerCut Status Sri Lanka: tell whether an outage is scheduled, island-wide or a local fault.
- Metro Bus Halt Finder: find the exact roadside halt for Colombo metro buses.
- Sri Lanka Lost and Found Pets Board: one lost-and-found board for pets outside Colombo. Stamped Needs a twist.

What's next
New ideas go live three times a week. The countdown on the Ideas page shows when the next one is due.
If you are building in Sri Lanka, list your product so it can appear next to the ideas it matches. You can also browse the Sri Lankan startup directory, see what launched this month in BuiltList Monthly, or use the Ask AI search on BuiltList to find products by what they do.
